Armature Geologies (series)
Although the strong pink support structure suggests otherwise, on close inspection, the geological specimen in this work is stable and self-supporting. But the inclusion of a conspicuous display mechanism reframes this rock as an artifact– an object that contains within it a rich record of deep time activity. Geology as media. Gently nestled against each other, the two contrasting elements celebrate notions of human and nonhuman as coextensive.
At a time where the physical world is increasingly being compressed, transmitted, and experienced digitally, Tom Borgas’ art practice is concerned with drawing attention to this shift through its reverse– by presenting the aesthetic and structural motifs of digital technology as actual objects and events in real space/time. Tom’s work is foundationally sculptural but extends to include performative and participatory elements as a means of engaging an audience.
